The claims unit operates under a contract
with the California Victim and Government Claims Board (www.vcgcb.ca.gov) in Sacramento.
The program reimburses eligible crime victims for losses incurred as a
result of being injured or threatened with injury during a crime.
Typical losses include medical/dental expenses, mental health counseling
costs, wage loss, support loss for dependants, and funeral/burial
expenses. The funds for this program consist of fines, forfeited bail
bonds, penalties, and special assessments paid by federal and state
criminal offenders. No taxpayer dollars are used to fund the Victim
The unit is
comprised of two claims specialists and one legal office assistant.
During 2011, the claims unit processed 1002 applications for
reimbursement and paid out $1,121,414.95 in approved claims.
